Xplor announces PDF University 2007 for Spring Graphics of the Americas

Xplor International is hosting its annual Graphics of America exhibition in Miami this spring, and announced this week that in conjunction with the event it will for the first time be organizing a PDF University. The PDF University will run from February 28th to March 3, 2007 at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

According to the company, the university is a natural outgrowth of its first PDF event PDF Forum which was held in 2006. For the 2007 event, the focus will be on education and Xplor has landed a stellar group of instructors and leaders in the PDF arena.

PDF University will be led by two chairs and notable PDF experts — U.S.-based David Zwang and Switzerland-based Stephan Jaeggi.

‘Leading experts from North America and Europe will teach the students about the best use of PDF in multiple areas. March 1 is dedicated to prepress production. On March 2 we will cover different interesting topics like server-based PDF creation and Web-to-print solutions for document publishing which will also be interesting for corporate publishers. One of the highlights will certainly be Jim King’s class on the future of PDF and Flash. Jim has been with Adobe almost since the beginning and is currently their PDF Architect,’ said Jaeggi.

Instructors for the event include Dov Isaacs, Principal Scientist, Adobe Systems, Martin Bailey-Technical Officer, Global Graphics, Olaf Drummer, CEO of Callas Software and others.

The University will kick off with a Dov Isaacs led tutorial titled, ‘Reliable PDF Print Publishing Workflows.’

Isaacs’ class will focus on how users new to PDF can create reliable PDF files for print publishing from several different applications. Experienced users will also benefit from the class coverage of problems faced in print publishing, PDF/X-Plus and the Ghent PDF Workgroup specifications and recommendations for PDFs in terms of direct export vs. Distiller.

Each class will be 50 minutes in length with instructors focused on one topic of coverage. Courses offered include: PDF for Prepress Production, Acrobat 8 Print Production Features, PDF/X — the Standard for Prepress Files, Color in PDF, PDF Output Tests, PDF RIPs, PDF Lab: Hottest PDF Tools for Prepress Production, PDF for Document Publishing, Acrobat 8 New Document Features, PDF/A Standard Class, Web-to-Print Solutions, The Future of PDF and Flash and others for developers are being added as well.

The Tips and Tricks course for Advanced PDF users which will be held on Saturday afternoon, March 3rd will surely have a big draw as users will be able to query ‘PDF Pope’ Stephan Jaeggi with questions on PDFs and attendees can also bring their files on USB or CD-R for analysis by Jaeggi if they dare!

The Acrobat 8 New Document Features class will be of great interest to participants and will cover methods for securing PDF content, combining files from multiple applications into a single document, changing headers/footers/watermarks to PDFs and processes for managing and organizing feedback to expedite document collaboration. The class instructor will be PDF expert Lori DeFurio, Acrobat User Community, Adobe Systems Inc..
