We reported early last month that Planet PDF CEO Karl De Abrew had been diagnosed with a non-malignant brain tumor, and had undergone surgery in Melbourne, Australia. Doctors successfully removed a large percentage of the tumor, and advised him to take an extended break from work to fully recover from the diagnosis and treatment.
Some six weeks later, we’re delighted to offer an update on Karl’s status: He’s insistent on getting back in the saddle, and plans to resume his role and duties next week.
Having been given the all-clear by his doctor to travel overseas, Karl is aiming to participate as always in the Seybold San Francisco 2004 conference (August 17-19) and the ninth PDF Conference from DigiPub Solutions Corp. in Baltimore (September 13-14).
Karl maintained a special online ‘Tumorblog’ during his recovery to keep friends and colleagues around the world apprised of his condition and of his determination to bounce back. Many also posted generous words of support, for which Karl wishes to express heartfelt appreciation:
‘I’d like to sincerely thank all of the kind folks who sent words of encouragement and support during what was a very trying time for me personally. I’m sorry I wasn’t able to respond to each individual message at the time, but please be assured that in life’s darker moments, it’s the friendship and thoughtfulness of others that truly warms the heart. Once again, thank you all so much. I’m very much looking forward to getting back amongst the PDF community.’
And from all of us: ‘Welcome back, Karl!’
