This week in PDF has seen updates to a free Java-based PDF viewer and a PDF extraction tool and the release of a new iPhone-based PDF viewer.
First up, Gnostice Information Technologies has released an updated version of Free PDF Viewer. The Java-based application can be used to display and print PDF documents or to export PDF pages in a variety of image formats. As an OS-independent Java application, Free PDF Viewer can also be used on most Windows, Linux or Mac computers. For more information, check out the official website.
Also updated this week was Docudesk’s deskUNPDF. According to Docudesk, version 3 was designed to address users’ growing needs to reuse and extract PDF content. With that in mind, a major new feature is the updated Accu-Text rendering engine, which improves text and image conversion accuracy. The extraction of tabular data such as that from Excel spreadsheets has been a particular point of improvement. deskUNPDF 3 also includes the new Zone Extraction Tool, which can be used to eliminate content not desired in the conversion process, such as headers and footers. deskUNPDF Version 3 is available in Standard, Professional, and Mac versions. On the release front, this week in PDF has also seen the launch of Readdle’s new iPhone-based PDF viewer. PDF Expert 1.0 allows users to save PDF email attachments, perform full-text document searching, navigate using PDF bookmarks and includes support for password protected documents. In addition to PDF documents, PDF Expert can also be used to view Microsoft Office files, iWork documents, HTML, TXT and image files. The built-in network file server allows users to mount PDF Expert as a shared network drive over a Wi-Fi network to any computer equipped with Mac OS X 10.4 or later, Windows XP or Windows Vista and copy documents to the iPhone using drag-and-drop or copy/paste techniques.
