This week in PDF: Assistive Technology goes multi-lingual

As we reach the mid-point of the year, this week in PDF sees an assistive technology vendor add support for French and Spanish, the release of an update to a popular preflight tool and a workflow solution integrate the Adobe PDF Print Engine.

First up, Premier Assistive Technology has released a multi-lingual edition of its accessibility product, developed in collaboration with the Alternative Media Access Center (AMAC) at the University of Georgia – Athens. PDF Equalizer was designed to make these alternative formats accessible without going through a conversion process. PDF Equalizer can open and read all versions of Adobe PDF files, allow users to take notes, convert the documents to MP3 and control what and when it reads aloud to the user. PDF Equalizer ML (Multi-Lingual) offers concurrent support for English, Spanish and French, the three most spoken languages in North America. The new edition enables users to pick the interface language of their choice as well as translate the information to that same language. Moving from screen to press now, and Enfocus software has begun shipping an update to its flagship preflight plug-in for Acrobat. PitStop Professional 7.2 now features Windows Vista support, enhanced Certified PDF technology, an updated user interface and a faster startup time. Check out the Enfocus Software website.

Last but not least, Screen has announced the launch of its Trueflow SE workflow, which integrates the Adobe PDF Print Engine (APPE) into the Trueflow PDF- and JDF-based prepress production workflow. Trueflow SE has been designed to serve the needs of printers using multiple CTP and digital printing systems, improving overall print productivity and profitability. According to the press release, it is a full JDF production workflow for printers that seek automation and tools that can easily be used by relatively inexperienced operators, combining the strengths of PDF for content definition and the JDF standard for job ticketing and process control. Trueflow SE adds support for CTP and ‘Print on Demand’ devices in the same workflow, PostScript files and offers expanded JDF capabilities. For more, check out Screen’s official website.

That’s it for this week. Watch this space!
