This week in PDF: Adobe upgrades CAD support in Acrobat 3D

This week in PDF has seen Adobe release an upgrade patch for its premium Acrobat product, the PDF/A Competence Center announce its first international PDF/A Conference and LuraTech upgrade its server-based document processing solution.

First up, Adobe Systems has announced the immediate availability of a free download for Adobe Acrobat 3D that delivers updated 3D computer-aided design (CAD) translators. The patch allows Acrobat 3D users to convert many of the latest CAD formats into PDF without requiring the user to own CAD software. The update also addresses several bugs associated with CAD import in Acrobat 3D Version 8. To download the patch, check out the official Adobe web site.

In other update news, LuraTech has updated its server-based document processing solution. The new and improved version of LuraDocument PDF Compressor Server boasts multi-core processor support, enabling users to process documents faster while avoiding per page usage charges with LuraTech’s unlimited usage licensing structure. Form recognition and data extraction have also been added, eliminating the need for users to manually sort paper documents for processing and automatically extracting data for import. More information can be found on the vendor web site.

Finally, the PDF/A Competence Center has announced that it will hold its inaugural PDF/A Conference from April 10-11 in Amsterdam’s Hilton Hotel. The event will boast such expert speakers as Adobe’s Technical Standards Evangelist Leonard Rosenthol and PDF architect Jim King in the technical track. The first day’s sessions will be divided into a track for basic information on PDF/A, one for ‘advanced’ participants and a technical track for developers, integrators and IT specialists. By contrast, the second day will focus primarily on practical applications and will cater to professionals working in areas such as archives and libraries, along with those in business-to-customer institutions such as banks, insurance companies and telecommunications providers.
