Chizen outlines Adobe future for, beyond Acrobat

In an article titled ‘Adobe documents its plans for the future,’ Computing features a recent interview with Adobe Systems CEO and prsident Bruce Chizen regarding the company’s plans for and beyond Acrobat.’

Chizen named three specific opportunities, two more related to its imaging poducts than its Acrobat and PDF technologies:


  • to continue to add value to the creative professional
  • to take advantage of the transformation of visual photography
  • to help organisations with their document processes

The latter ‘intelligent document business’ — including server-based products aimed at large enterprises — remains the company’s biggest opportunity, Chizen said, based in part on the ubiquity of the free Adobe Reader. Revenue for Adobe’s Acrobat-oriented products and solutions ‘grew 42 per cent year-on-year and now represents more than a third of our revenue,’ he said. ‘That, we believe, will be our fastest-growing long-term business and certainly our largest.’

But the growth of Acrobat/PDF has also spawned an increasing number of third-party products and solutions that compete with Adobe’s, as Chizen noted in the interview:

‘Our biggest competitor is custom development. If you look at an organisation such as Pfizer, it built a PDF workflow leveraging an Oracle database to do clinical trials. It did that work itself without using off-the-shelf tools.’
