In a slight departure from our usual focus on users and uses of Adobe Acrobat and PDF, we want to make the global Planet PDF community aware of a recent development related to our own team. Karl De Abrew, Planet PDF CEO and founder, was recently diagnosed with a low-grade brain tumor. Following a series of tests and a subsequent biopsy performed at the Royal Melbourne Hospital late last month, Karl received an encouraging diagnosis: not malignant. Karl’s outlook is very positive, but he is heeding medical advice in taking a leave of absence from his varied Planet PDF responsibilities for two to three months to focus exclusively on his recovery. During Karl’s leave, colleague Sam Chandler has been named acting CEO.
Some of you who’ve attended any of the leading industry events — such as the PDF Conference sponsored by DigiPub Solutions and the Seybold Seminars PDF Conference — know Karl from his roles as an expert speaker and as the moderator of the popular, informative and frequently humorous ‘Power Panel,’ in which select PDF experts field questions from attendees. The good news is that Karl intends to continue the enlightening, entertaining duties and is planning to attend both Seybold San Francisco in mid-August and the next DigiPub Solutions’ PDF Conference in mid-September.
The depth of support for Karl from family and friends across the PDF planet has contributed greatly to his positive outlook.
