Adobe Systems — originator of the Portable Document Format (PDF), Acrobat software suite and the Intelligent Document Platform (IDP) — has signed on as a gold sponsor of Planet PDF, joining PDFlib and AdLib eDocument Solutions as major financial supporters of the site. The deal is the culmination of years of collaboration on editorial and promotional items that have included assistance with beta programs, developer surveys and workshops, and the sharing of content.
Planet PDF CEO Karl De Abrew and Editor-In-Chief Kurt Foss both wrote regular columns on Acrobat/PDF-related topics for the now-defunct Adobe.com ePaper Center. De Abrew’s column, entitled ‘Pulp Free’, focused on PDF eBooks and the concept of the paperless office — an ideal that Adobe has promoted first with its ePaper initiative, and more recently with the IDP.
The content exchange has been mutually beneficial, with key Adobe personalities sharing their thoughts on the past, present and future of both the PDF format and the Acrobat suite of products. Planet PDF currently is the sole official mirror site for downloads of the popular, free Adobe Reader software.
‘Planet PDF is delighted to have Adobe Systems come on board as a major corporate sponsor,’ says Planet PDF CEO Karl De Abrew, ‘the site has had an ongoing role in helping Adobe to promote Acrobat and PDF during the past six years. It’s a perfect fit: the creators of PDF at the most comprehensive, popular and independent Web site exclusively focused on Adobe Acrobat and PDF.’
In addition to the sponsorship, Planet PDF has now launched a new Adobe Resources area for the posting of free whitepapers and other items such as online seminars.
Since it’s inception in 1998, Planet PDF has lead the industry as an active promoter of and participant in major PDF-relevant events such as Seybold Seminars, PDF Conference and Open Publish. The site even celebrated its 5-year birthday last November at PDF Conference in Anaheim — an event of which it is a founding co-sponsor.
‘Planet PDF has played an important role in promoting the benefits of Acrobat and PDF solutions, ‘said Ricky Liversidge, director of Acrobat marketing. ‘We value their commitment to building a truly informational site and to helping further educate Acrobat and Adobe PDF users.’
