Acrobat 6 First Look – Reducing File Size & PDF Optimizer

Editor’s Note: This article is part of the Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Learning Center

Both Acrobat Standard and Professional include a menu item (File, Reduce File Size)
for reducing the file size of the current document. The size of the
resulting document will vary depending on the compatibility of the Acrobat
version compatibility you select.

By selecting the version compatibility, such as Acrobat 4.0 and later, 5.0
and later or 6.0 and later, Acrobat 6 will make its best efforts at compressing
your document with the available technologies for each particular version of
Acrobat (or more correctly the PDF specification with that version). For
example, the newest version of Acrobat includes support for JBIG2 and
JPEG2000 image compression technologies.

PDF Optimizer

The PDF Optimizer — an Acrobat Professional-only tool — expands on the poorly
named PDF Consultant in Acrobat 5 — it allow you to examine the space usage of
different elements of a PDF file and then allowed you to remove them from the
PDF to reduce its size. Like PDF Consultant, PDF Optimizer can also be used in
Batch Sequences.

PDF Optimizer extends the functionality of the PDF Consultant so that in
essence the tool becomes more like a ‘redistiller’ or ‘refryer’ (the term used
by many in the PDF community for redistilling a PDF). So, like Acrobat
Distiller, you have options to downsample images and un/embed fonts as well as
remove document elements, including fonts, comments, form actions, document
structure, hidden layer content and the like.

Adaptive Compression

PDF Optimizer includes a different type called Adaptive Compression. When this is
selected the Image Settings options are not available. Acrobat’s user guide
describes what it does as follows:

Acroscan applies advanced image processing to images in the PDF file, including
segmentation, edge shadow removal, deskewing, pepper removal, and dehalftoning.
